Hello ladies, well it is four weeks this saturday we have had his lordship and time has flown by. He has been to chatsworth house for a walk up in the woods behind the house , there is a little dell with a huge pond/lake and it is very hidden, it was iced over and the mist hung over it very beautiful, we had a coffee and cake then down in the stable block afterwards and he had a bit of system overload as everyone had small dogs and there was just soooo much to look at and smell. He is funny whenever we take him somewhere new he just doesnt know where to look or sniff first!,Of course he jumped up into the landie - with the help of your suggestions ladies a piece of beef thrown into the back swiftly followed by Jamsie, who isnt worried about the car , he just cant be bothered to jump in when there is human to lift him in. !. Anyway after the long walk at Chatsworth - yes you guessed it- he simply didnt have the energy to possibly jump all the way up there into the back of the landrover , and Tony couldnt lift him cos he still had a bad back form the week before so he held the door open whilst I placed his front paws on the back and put my shoulder under his bum and lifted him in. Much to the amusement of the folk sat in their car opposite us. I now have a bad back !. I am going to make him a board he can walk up as the alternative is he will have to run behind next time. I swear he was grinning when I was pushing his bum up cheeky lad. He has been out for lots of lovely walks and never stops looking around him, he spots everything . I have been doing some training on a long lead in the field and he has been very good with that. The other day my friend brought tiny tiny whippet to meet Jamise she has decided that she is top dog over Jamsie and he agrees with her!!! he is very respectful of her yet she is a little dot of a dog, he loved her and asked her to come upstairs to the garden to play, it was so sweet . She told him off a couple of times for being rough and after that he was besotted. He is so good to do anything with, he lays on his back with his feet in the air when i am filing his nails, like he is having a manicure!!. I have to sing to Evie, Nelly the elephant does the trick, stops me getting cross with her when she fidgets and it seems to calm her down. Teeth cleaning he is good for that as well of course. Week three he started to sit in the hallway after a walk which worried me as I thought he wasnt happy but he would come and join us after a while, we think it was like a box with the three walls around him and also cooler than the room as he does tend to get hot so reckon he was just chilling out after his walk. He loves being groomed and will nudge your hand towards the brush if it is on the table. Our big happy boy...Rx

On the whole Good Boy Jamesie! Sally has lapses on the 'jumping into the car for a treat' but thankfully she is only a small greyhound and I can lift her - this is getting harder as she has put on weight!

Beautiful Jamesie ... he's having a bundle of fun Rach ... well done to you and Tony but I do agree, a ramp to get in the landie is the answer rather than ibuprofen and osteopaths for your backs.

Oh mary your right what an adventure!. How lucky were those dogs that you were passing just think what could have happened. I bet their owners were so glad to get them back .well done you two. x We had Jamsie weighed at the vets the other day and I dont think it is right as she said he was only32kgs and he felt like 70kgs from my end when i was shoving him up into the car!.

Hi Rachel, I think that the vets have special scales, which are designed to fool us in to thinking we have a svelt dog when we know they have lead in their knickers!!!

At last!!.. the one thing which has bothered me is that he wouldnt play with his toys, but we knew he was during the night or when we werent in the room as they would be on the sofa with him in the morning or next to him on the floor. Even when Evie would throw one around he would look the other way if we were in the room. If we tried to play with him with a toy he would look away or go and sit on the sofa, but yesterday he did, he played with blue elephant in front of me, pouncing on it and throwing it around. He has been playing hide and seek with biscuits for a couple of weeks tho, where I send hmi out of the room whilst I hide a biscuit and he has to seek it when he is let back in - he likes that game and wags like mad when he knows we are playing that so I couldnt understand why he was being 'shy' with his toys. Has anyone else experienced that?... Also we had a programme we had recorded on last night- called come dine with me , its one where a different person in a group of four or five folk cooks a meal each night. Well last night Jamsie was on his bed ZZzzzing when he suddenly pricked his ears and came down the room with his head cocked, he wanted to check out the kitchen and wouldnt go outside when I opened the door, he started panting and his pupils were huge. We didnt know what was upsetting him at all. He came and stood next to me and hid his head in my lap and kept looking around him. then we realised that whenever a particular man on the programme spoke that was when he reacted!. We turned it off and in a while he went back to bed as normal and was soon zzzzing away. He just didnt like the chaps accent or tone .We shall have to watch the rest of the programme with the volume turned off!. Poor jamsie. Rx

Amy our first greyhound never played with toys, it just seemed as if she wasn't interested but when Basil arrived ( Amy choose him from a selection presented to her by Ann and Paul) it was a whole new ball game. We did wonder if perhaps Amy had never had chance to play but felt able to be puppy like with Basil's encouragement. Basil has freaky 10 mins, especially in the evenings, throwing and bouncing on toys;must be a boy thing!! We also have trouble with Basil and men who speak one of the eastern european languages, he growls at them and gets agitated. After 4 years and 3 older rescue greyhounds we have found that they carry a lot of emotional baggage, some of which isn't apparent for a couple of years. Maybe Jamsie was making a comment on 'Come dine with me'

Hi Mary, Yes the man in particular isnt liked by any of the group either!. Yes I guess we will never know what experiences they have had . I am lucky that Jamsie doesnt seem to have any hang ups with everyday stuff - just cats. oh and he is very very respectful of sheep which is lucky for us as it is sheep everywhere here. We doubt if he has had the sheep training which is normally done with a dog tied to a ram with a rope so think he is just wary of them. The shy with toys was an odd one for us as we have never experienced that, esp as Evie is playful and will throw them around and we have had his new little friend over who just adores toys and invites him to play with her but in front of us he just wouldnt do it and avoided eye contact with us. If only they could speak eh?. i love the idea of all the 'chaps' paraded for amy to choose her new friend. I always say the dogs enjoy having a companion as it is someone to talk hound with as well.. Our old dearly departed boy Flash was mad keen on squeaky toys. He had (we still have) a huge toy box filled to the brim. He used to grab them, throw them in the air and trot from room to room displaying the toy until you said "good boy Flash". He usually did this after eating his meals - you can imagine how grubby his furries became.
Gem has absolutely no interest in toys at all.
They both have fears of brooms, loud noise and men with nicotine stained hands. You can only guess what may have happened to the poor darlings in their past.
Jamesie sounds an absolute delight and just the perfect fit for you.

Hi guys I thought you may like this.....I hope it makes you smile ..... my non doggy friend noticed jamise dew claws and I explained what they were.....she looked at me and said 'oh yes I understand why they have been left on!!!! of course its because they are racing dogs' ... er we said 'ok then why does that make a difference?..' ... she said ' oh isnt it so that they can control their speed when they go around the track ?...you know so that they can slow down at the corners by opening them out !?!....... ? what can I answer to that?... it made us smile though Rx

Gem uses hers to great effect when eating chews. She looks so cute holding the thing whilst she nibbles it with the few teeth she has remaining.

Just a quick update on the big lad - oh and he is! I got the weight wrong he is 38kilos which is about 6stone so that made me feel better that I was right about lifting a heavy boy not a namby pamby 30kilos!....he is settling in v well and although we havent let him off the lead yet he seems quite happy. he loves just laying in the garden and chilling and pottering about on his own. He wont use the ramp to get into the car so has to be 'shouldered' up into the landie , lazy boy. He wont do stairs either and will go up them but coming down requires a harness and a human to help him down the steps as when he tries on his own he only hits one stair and the rest he flies over which ends up with him in a heap at the bottom!!. He is off to an Afghan Show tomorrow - just to sit in his cage and watch as mummy will be busy and he is allowed as a spectator doggie. he has had a bath tho and his nails filed and his teeth cleaned of course so he is sparkling. I hope he will be a good boy in his cage. i wonder if i can pass him off as a smooth coated afghan?..... He has a new friend called bob ,he is a ten yr old grey who belongs to the lady we have found to look after him when we need to go out for more than a couple of hours with out him. He loves him and her - gives her lolly licks when he sees her and will happily snooze alongside Bob. Happy boys. Rx

Hi Lorraine, he had a great time, he had to stay in his cage whilst I was busy and had a few whinges but on the whole was a very good boy and of course got lots of pats from the ladies and admired quite a bit, he also loved the affies - we had lots of wagging going on and had a little girl affie flirting with him which he quite liked. He came home with a red rosette to show Evie whippet - (they always want to know what the other dogs who have been out have won so we couldnt come home empty handed and I dont think Evie noticed it had an Afghan on it). He has now made a nest of his beds and is fast asleep twitching away. Rx

our big lad has been with us three months now and time has flown by. Lots of laughter and smiles. its rather like haivng a big teenager in the house except this one tidys up!.well at least you will find it in his bed if we have left it lying around... and eats everything you give him but will leave biscuit crumbs!. he likes spending time in his bed or on the sofa sprawled out asleep , likes going out with his 'mates' esp Bob the greyhound although he has a few new mates, there is a manic border collie who never stops leaping around, there is Annie whippet who is tiny girl and she bullies him a bit but he likes it. Loves going out in the car and going places, any new experience, loves walking down a high street and geting pats from everyone. He seems to be getting used to seeing small dogs now and he has never growled or barked at anything, he just looks at it with a funny jamsie look. He does a lot of thinking esp if it somethng new we are doing with him so cant wait to take him to the seaside in a couple of weeks to see what he will think of the yorkshire coast. He loves making you laugh and he is always pleased to see you and welcomes visitors with a huge smile and lots of wags. He likes to steal fruit from the fruit bowl and ends up with a 'pet orange' or 'grapefruit' for a few days until he bites them and they squirt juice at him then he kills them. Very funny but we have to make sure no grapes or plums are in the bowl now he has discovered it. At bed time he sleeps with a blue octopus Awww and his head on a cushion and not a peep is heard until 7.30am then he wants me up if Im not already up. I can take him into shops and my friends homes and he just lays down like a good boy although one of my friends lets him sit in her best armchair which is only tiny and she cannot believe how he folds himself into it , Oh and my single friend wants to borrow him as he is a man magnet!!. She cannot believe it as everytime we are out with him the most gorgeous men stop and talk LOL!!..... the whippets only get little old ladies who stop and talk. So he may be getting a job at the singles club they all want to borrow him. Greyhounds eh?.....cant beat em. Rx

You definitely can't beat greyhounds Rachel! They are the best! Jamesie has really landed on his paws living with you. You echo my foundings of greyhounds with my Sally. We've now had her 9 months and she is still changing and getting ever more loving and provides us with lots of laughs! ;D Where are you going on the Yorkshire coast? We are going on holiday in a couple of weeks - staying on a farm near Pickering on the edge of the North York Moors but will be having at least one day trip to the coast at Bempton, near Flamborough. It'll be our first ever holiday with a dog so not sure how it will go but I'm sure we'll have lots of tales to tell!

Hello everyone, Its over four months now Jamise has been a part of our lives and what a joy he is. I hope everyone read lorraines piece on sally and her holiday, it was so nice to meet up , we really enjoyed it and I know jamsie did. wow sally steam train eh!......jamsie loved the whole experience especially the shops and all the attention he got, lots of pats and how nice to hear everyones greyhound stories and meet lots of other greyhounds. At the end of may I took him up to westyorkshire dog rescue to help walk the resuce dogs . he went out with the small fluffy ones which are his faves of course, it was a good experience for him and at the start he was very keen but by the end of the walk he was chilled out with them. As a reward he got to have a run in the exercise paddock which is really interesting as she has lots of trees in it, nook and crannys to explore which he did after checking out the 8ft perimeter fence for a way out!!!...not ready to be let off in the field yet I think. The last couple of weeks i have been in hospital for an abdominal op and need to go back in for another one in the next couple of weeks so he has had no mummy to walk him but he has no shortage of glamorous single ladies to take him for his daily exercise Lol, he is loving the attention and comes back covered in lipstick . what a good boy. rachx Attachments:

Thank you for your well wishes ladies, I am now nearly two weeks in recovery after my last op and will be seeing my consultant on the 28th hoping to get my next surgery date sorted but it has to be around the dogs!!.... I am judging whippets and afghans at the beginning of july so need it doing either the week before or after depending on what he thinks is best and if i can manage, and then if not I want to come to the kamas cave show so need to be able to drive for three hours!!!...poor man he thinks I am quite mad!. Poor jamsie is being very patient with me and has got into the routine of Daddy taking him out at some ungodly hour like 5.30am for his walk and then waiting until evening for his next one . 'His' ladies call and take him out too during the day and off he trots without a backward glance - fickle eh?..... The good thing is that he has now learned to come down stairs by himself and is quite happy to trot up the steps to the garden for a pooch ad then carefully make his own way down the stairs one at a time, he gets his front paws on then slowly places hind paws one at a time on the stair behind before attempting the next one - a far cry from the whippets who hurtle down them at high speed. He is so pleased with himself and wags like mad when he has made it down. Clever boy. He has got quite a bit of practice in for his different snoozing postions during the last couple of weeks so i dont think he is too upset that he is not getting his walks with me. As i am typing this he is fast asleep in a classic roach wagging his tail like mad!...Rx

Fab update Rachel and so pleased Jamesie is doing the stairs on his own. Having seen your beautiful cottage I know how much it means to you and Tony that he can get to the sniffing areas of your garden via the stairs on his own. Well done Jamesie. I do hope that your surgery goes ok and that it accommodates the judging you have to do and also for the KC show. It would be lovely to see you all again ... though the flatness of South Holland will no doubt leave you gasping for the hills of Derbyshire. Take care and fingers and paws crossed to see you in July. Kisses to Jamesie and Princess Evie too. X

Hello greyhound fans, its now 8 MONTHS since Jamsies joined our home and it has flown past. He is doing really well and is a proper 'pet dog' now. He is such a chilled out dog nothing bothers him and he just loves new experiences . Stairs are no problem and he can turn a nimble toe to jumping up into the landrover as well where he sits and surveys the world quite happily. He doesnt wear a muzzle now as he gets on fine with little dogs he meets on his travels and he likes children too, he happily stood and had his back massaged by a couple little boys whilst a little girl hung of his neck the other day at our little fun show in the village. He won handsome dog - of course!. He has a pet sheepskin rug which he loves and sleeps with at night. He has his last wee (if its not raining- if it is forget it he will sleep on a full bladder thank you mum!) has his night time treat and a kiss goodnight then snuggles down He has (just) stopped barking for me to get up at 7am ish in a morning now and will let me have a little lie in. He also is ok with being left for four hours or less if we go shopping so thats a relief but he greets like you like a long lost friend when you get home. The trick is he only gets his fave thing the peanut filled bone when I am going out so he nearly pushes me out the door so he can have his treat!!. He is a wonderful companion and we are so proud of him. He responds well to the phrase 'here you are' and will bound down the room to see what you have for him but I daren't let him off yet in the fields. I always feel mean letting Evie off for her run but he doesn't seem to mind and is quite happy to walk at your side .He loves fresh salmon we have discovered - and homemade quiche and has a custard cream for his supper and yes you have guessed it he still weighs 39kgs!!! .... but I cant resist that sad hungry face..... He is very attuned to things, he picked up that I wasnt too well when I had my ops this summer and would come up to the side of the chair and give hugs by pressing the side of his face against mine . I have just made a new batch of cards with the kamascave details on to hand out when people stop us. . if it makes just one more person look at having a retired greyhound and to check out the nearest site then it works doesnt it. One lady went to visit the emley one at the weekend to see the dogs and she is going up to walk them again to get to know them..so you never know Jamise may get a new friend to walk with. I took them out nice and early this morning so he is snoozing now and then will sit in the garden this afternoon . I want to get a sunshade for him to wear to stop the sun in his eyes ... I have seen some doggie ones but cant remember where. Does anyone know where I can get one? Rachxx
