Hi Everyone. Jamsiemum here. ann very kindly brought our new boy 'home' today. I did have a panic as we had snow last night and I was worried he wouldnt be able to come but hey -hell or high water - ann got through!. SO here he is, my little whippet girl has studiously ignored him all day but sneaked a quick sniff at him when we took hin out for a walk this afternoon. He has negotiated the kissing gates in the field quite well and had an investigative walk around a couple of fields and around the village. then slept on the dog sofa all afternoon and then had a big tea and then ....slept some more. So all very boring but isnt that great?. NO stress ,no worry, one very happy boy. Has a very dopey look on his face, sort of 'this is the life'. What a lovely boy .x

Gawd just written this once and lost it so hope it doesnt post twice!!. Jamsie had a great first night, we kept Evie whippet upstairs and he slept on the dog sofa downstairs, Evie wanted letting out at 2am for wees so woke Jamsie up for one as well - not impressed , he got his own back by waking us up at 7am with a little howl to be let out for a wee but then we soon realised he wanted more than that but wouldnt do it in the yard or go up the steps to the garden so Tony had an early morning walk, which he really enjoyed but it has made him the resident expert on the size of Jamsies poos!!!.there are four sizes?! - dont ask. good job we are all dog people here!. He then enjoyed sharing our breakfast with two pieces of hot buttered toast and I swear he expected a cup of coffee too!. Ate a huge breakfast , slept some more and then we took him out for a lovely long walk up in the hills with Evie in charge. He has met horses, joggers, mountain bikers and a husky, ignored them all but the only thing he did do was a very fast reverse walk when he was faced with a field of little Herdwick sheep, we reckon he must have thought they were a field of large bunnies all staring at him - sort of all his dreams come to haunt him. he needed a bit of encouragement to go past them and kept giving little sideways glances at them and of course they all just stood looking at him lined up in rows of three- tough sheep up here. !!. He is very interested in things and you can see he is doing a lot of thinking and taking things in - tony reckons he is sussing where all the gaps are in the dry stones walls ready for when we let him off -He listens to Tony more than me at the mo but like i say once he knows who is boss it will change. Evie whippet is still ignoring him but they ate quite happily together this morning and she trotted out quite happily with him and shared a few sniffs of interesting smells - sort of 'what do you think it is then- fox or badger?'...He is very laid back , even when my chap who is rebuilding my dry stone walls popped in jamsie carried on sleeping, seems to be a recurring theme here zzzz. Seems like he has been here for years not just 24hrs.

Sounds like he has found his place in the world Rachel! It was good to meet you and Tony and shame we had to depart when we did but it was way dark by the time we were on home turf. Glad Jamesie remains partial to toast and given that coffee machine you have I'm sure it wont be long before he wants his own frappuccino to go with it. He does truly seem so settled ... you're right - it's like he's been there forever. Am over to Ann's today to help sort out the remaining things we collected from you .....

Hi Kate, yes I could have nattered for a lot longer!!!. It was lovlely to meet you and glad you got home safe -good navigator!. Jamsie has been an angel- no trouble at all . He goes to bed at about 8pm and wakes 7am when he wants to go out whihc is fine by me, gets me up and out , it was lovely and frosty this morning and it was so nice to have a walk in the field with this handsome man beside me. He was roaching on his sofa last night and i was so pleased as i think that sorta said 'ah this is it!'. He loves his toast when he gets back in from his morning trot , then brekkies as 11am then a nice walk up in the hills and more sleep whilst we are busy. We are taking him out to Stockport in the car in a while so we will see how we get on- have to wake him up first! -he has fitted in so quickly . Loves cupboards and has learnt how to open the doors in the hallway where we keep his food. no handles but they are opened by pushing them, he sussed that yesterday. He watches everything (when he is awake!) and you can see him thinking about things. Everytime we have a cupboard door open or the fridge his head appears in it.LOL. Glad you got the stuff back safely , we are going to tackle the attic very soon so will have some more stuff when we come in july. Bet it took ages to unload it all. x

Ah, Rachel ... hard to believe he's settled in as though he's been there years. But, that's just perfect. Yes, it took us a while to unload the van but today everything has been sorted into ebay, market, snatch and grab and special items. It was dead exciting going through it all and Ann has sold quite a few of the snatch and grab items already so she is delighted. Fancy Jamesie sussing how to open the doors on the cupboards ... bet Evie told him how to do it!

Hi Ann/ Kate, He visited pets at home yesterday so we could get him a harness for the car and he was a good boy, walked past the bunnies in the glass cages, had his muzzle on which was pleased about as the world and his wife were in the store with staffies, which they kept shoving under his nose but he was really good. He pulled a very funny face when he walked past the shelves with the live crickets, the boxes squeeked at him!. He met a lady greyhound in the store as well and said hello to her. So he has a huge red harness in XXL for the car now. Evie sat in the whole of the back and he sat on the one seat we left up in the back of the estate, perched neatly on it. He was shattered last night and spent all night on his sofa with his legs in the air showing us his tummy. Ive seen more of the surface of his paws than his face I think, . I am the only one who feeds him so we can change his male oreintation from Tony and make him listen to me in preparation for letting him off. I am also carrying a bag of sliced beef when we go out for walks (nice!) so that when I call him to me -still on a lead of course- and he comes to me he gets a treat of beef. We let him off on a little bit before the field it is a walled corridor with a kissing gate at each end and Tony lets him off to run to me so he gets his treat but he doesnt run he just saunters so I dont feel like he is missing being off and running at all. He isnt fully tuned in to us yet on the walks as there is so much for him to digest and take him he is focused on everything else. .This morning we had a lie in until 7.45am . Tony said when he took him in the field there was a lady with a Staffie running around and when we took him in there before our big walk he had remembered and was looking over to where she was with the dog .We had a shorter walk today as it was very cold and trying to snow so we did a practice leaving him and Evie alone whilst we went out in the car, we drove past the house a few times to see what happened, he was most upset at being left and jumped up on the window ledge when we drove off but then we saw a head on the back of the sofa looking out. We only left him for ten minutes at the most and when we came back in he greeted us like we had been gone for hours!! He got down on his front and leaped around oh bless him and then I took Evie out on her own and left Tony with him, he said he had just settled down on the sofa when I came back in so that was good, reward him for settling down by coming back in. He is sleeping again now .rachx

He is starting to recognise the 'here you are ' phrase I use as well now so thats a step forward, I use it with the horses as well whenever I feed or give them anything nice and it makes the girl who owns them all laugh, as she is the one who is there all the time and if she calls them in the field they all just look at her , so I get to shout 'here you are' and they all come charging up the field!!!...with the whippets I just used to shout 'puppies!' and they would all come charging . its good to have a generic phrase as it is easier than shouting their names. Was quite funny with 'puppies' though as they all got older but if they were being naughty it sorta diffused the situation as folk were forgiving thinking they were pups not 10 yr olds who should know better!. Tony had to go to a meeting today so different clothes on which Jamsie sussed straight away. He settled straight away after he had gone to work and I took him out on his own with Evie. My first time!. I have always compared owning a sighthound to driving a supercar as your reaction times have to be quite a bit quicker , you have to look futher ahead not just two cars ahead but ten cars, and its the same with these you have to think futher ahead, All I can say it was an exciting 'drive'!. Took my Ferrari out, we have decided Jamsie is a Ferrari cos he has a red coat and red collar and red muzzle , Evie is a Porche , Blooming started with a young lad and a white pup off the lead in the field - again thank goodness jamsie had his muzzle on and a tight collar on as he was determined to back out of it. I then walked him up the lane - I cant get through the stiles with him, he is a little large, so we go the long way around, it takes us past a field of highland cattle who were mooing like mad cos the farmer was out with the hay tractor, he ignored them and then walked him past a field of sheep, not herdwicks but longer in the leg I think they are suffolks, so quite big, they had a couple of early lambs so were a bit on guard, he just ignored them, I think he is a bit wary of sheep to be honest, gives little glances now and then thats all. Its lovely today as the snow is sitting on the tops of the hills and coombs edge where we walked today had a light frosting with the sun shining and my big boy and Evie it does the soul good. I havent felt safe walking on my own with just my little whippet since I lost my big boy in October, its sounds daft that I know but it can be quite isolated sometimes, but I felt quite safe with the big lad, whilst we know he is daft as a brush . then it was back home, he said hello to the lady farmer who said she was pleased to see he was on a lead as there has been a couple of cases of sheep worrying in the last week or so and four sheep had to be destroyed. shocking!. Then we met the dog on the lane who is let out to run lose in the fields and that was a bit exciting too. When we got in I left him alone to snooze and went up the garden to do some work and he was still in the same position when I got back so he had settled down v well. I shall try going out in a little while so he gets used to being left for little bits but he has been amazing. -although when I left him alone this morning to go and get my shower I remembered I had left my laptop plugged in and you know when you have a little think of oh my godness hope he is alright with the electric, I dont normally leave a dog with anything switched /plugged in etc and just as I got in the bathroom the electric all went off- I rushed down not knowing what to expect and the dogs where still in the same prone position I had left them in and the electric came back on as I opened the door, just a little power cut but I did make sure after that warning I switched the socket off before I went back up!!. So - so far so good. Tomorrow we are going to take him out for a day out somewhere in the car and then a nice walk so different sights . He is such a lovely boy x

Jamise and Evie had a trip out in the car yesterday , we went to nice old railway track walk called Millers Dales in derbyshire and we met a lovely lady who admired him and said she is moving to lincolnshire when she has sold her house and did we know anywhere near there she could look for a greyhound - of course I had forgotton to take the cards with Anns details on!!. I just said if you just ask anyone in lincs im sure they will know ann and paul. So hope that is the case. I am popping some cards in my pocket today. Linc is obviously the place to be. He sat in the car with his head on Evies seat so she had to rest her head on him and this morning they are on the sofa together his big paws are sort of around her He was tired this morning so didnt want toast just went straght back to bed when he had his morning quick trot. He is very respectful of Evie which is great . On the walks he is good and walks at your side but you can see he is still not quite tuned in to us as he is just watching and looking at everything absorbed in whats going on elsewhere. He wanted to look through the rails at the side of the viaduct to see where the traffic noise was coming from as at one point you cross over the road and he could hear it but couldnt work out where the cars where - pulled a jamsie face when he looked through. He is tired today so small walks today. Rachx

Hi Kate, Yes I think so too. Although we reckon that maybe Badger wont let him sit in front of the large fireplace as Jamsie prefers the small one which none of ours have sat by!? funny dog. Although the sofa is his preferred spot . He is soooo good we cannot believe it. Yesterday we did a couple of errands popping out leaving him and Evie at home, he was great. and later on when I put my jacket and boots on he didnt start getting excited until I got his lead so he didnt automatically expect that he was going out when I got ready. Im off judging on sunday(weather permitting!) so he will be on his own with Tony for the first time so they can do a bit more male bonding. We have no snow yet over her but it is threatening to appear. rachx

I am so glad you didnt have him because he was meant for us. When I lost my darling whippet boy Badger at the beginning of October last year we realised that his sister Evie was grieving and after always having had a housefull of hounds she had never been a lone dog. We were heartbroken still over my boy but knew we had to have another companion for her and for us, We did think about having another puppy to show but thought that wouldnt have been fair on her to bring a youngster in so we decided that we would give a home to an older dog .Id been looking at all the different rescue sites for quite a few weeks and was very openminded about what breed or non breed, disabilities or not but although there were lots of sad stories-blimey and lots of tears! I just knew I would know the moment I saw 'the one'. I wandered onto the RGT site one morning ended up at Kamascave and there he was!!. I knew it had to be him. So I was delighted when I rang and Ann said he was still there . Still cant believe he has only been here a week, it truly does feel like he has always been here. He has been watching the snow falling outside and pulled his Jamsie face, one ear 'on guard' and the the other down and one eyebrow up and one down very cute. He spends all his time on his back ZZZZZing when not out for walks, He and Evie are happy together and she has settled down v well with him. She had spent all her days watching out the window since we lost the lad and was not eating v well, she and Jamsie polish of each others dishes now . she sits with him now on the sofa and is learning to dodge his tailswipes. We have yet to intoduce him to Tonys mum and dad yet,(not told them yet) For years they thought we only had one whippet (we had 4 at the time) but dont think we can hide Jamsie. The funny thing was when I had put the phone down from speaking to Ann the first time, Mum in law rang and the first words she said was 'oh theres a chap just walking past with a lovely greyhound' ..spooky eh?. Mum in laws have in built second senses. Rx

Well, I am convinced that certain dogs are meant for certain people and I'm convinced Jamesie knew where he belonged coz he was giving lots of howzurfather in the kennels for about two or three weeks before coming to yours. It was really quite strange coz it was almost that he knew he was coming to your place. But, then again, I rather suspect greater powers are at work so far as these things are concerned ;-)

Well i cannot believe he has been here for only 9days, what a little star !. If anyone reads this who is thinking of getting a greyhound from Ann and Paul do not hesitate....just do it ! He is so good in the house, the car , on walks and such a super companion, intelligent , interesting, great conversationalist, just wish he could cook.!. Even though we have had a lot of doggies between us- Im sorry to day that Tony and I have become doting parent types, you know the type who says 'oh he did this last night or ooo look at his teeth,- take a photo quick' We were even fighting the other night to get the best position to take his picture when he was on his back, and Jamsie bless held the pose like a super model. We have told tonys mum we have added to our family and she cant wait to meet him - phew. Took him for a walk around the reservoirs near us today which are in super countryside and he was on alert all day, there were pheasants and grouse whizzing past all over the place.' Loverly' he said very entertaining.and he really enjoyed it. I vacummned when we got back and he was great, not an eyelid twitched even when I was sucking up his biscuit crumbs right next to him, we know he is pretty bomb proof too after tony managed to blow up a bag of rice in the microwave the other night as well!.. not a twitch from our lad!. Superstar Jamesie X such a happy boy.

Well its two weeks tomorrow we got Jamsie and it has flown past. He is laid now in front of the big fireplace on an old duvet of Badgers which i brought downstairs to use in my car and he adopted it straight away, its bright yellow which was Badgers favourite colour and it would seem that Jamsie likes it too so although it really doesnt go with the deocr it is here to stay. Took him out in my landrover today so he had a hot water bottle and had to wear an old polo neck jumper of Badgers which fitted him around his neck but was a bit short over his loin but it served the purpose and kept him warm, it is pretty cold in the landie and we all had a hot water bottle to cuddle. Tony has hurt his back this week so any lifting is down to me and of course we havent been able to persuade jamsie to jump into his car yet so mine was out of the question too so I had to lift him in so I have a bad back now!!. Why does he not do jumping?. can anyone tell me if that is a greyhound thing or is it just jamsie taking us for a ride?. anyway he liked the car as he could lie flat and see out the windows, I have a box in the back so it is all raised up and of course lots of nice beds and hotties ,so steamed windows and nose prints. It is a pretty basic car and if anyone has ever driven one they will know why all the farmers who drive them have bent backs and no teeth - well thats what all the farmers all look like that around here!. So we went for a nice walk up in derbyshire and it was trying to snow and the trees all had icicles hanging of them so it was a short walk today but that seemed to suit as jamsie said he felt daft wearing an orange jumper under his red coat. I havent let him off yet in the field as he is still concentrating on where he has seen thngs like little dogs and cats sat on the walls ,so maybe we shall try next week but he doesnt seem bothered, he is happy to walk on his lead .rach x

I think Jamsie is nervous of jumping in the car...2 of ours jump in no problem but our old lady Amy takes for ever to make her mind up and get her feet in the right position. I love the idea of hot water bottles to cuddle up to, just wont tell my 3 or we would never get out, they are always so slow in the mornings.

Sally doesn't like the car. I have now managed to get her to jump in by putting a tasty treat under her nose and then throwing the treat into the car! The treat has to be VERY tasty i.e chicken. Maybe you could try that...good luck! Sally is heavy enough, jamesie will break your back!
